Like any other technological advancement, the basics of television have been around for a long time. Ancient Greeks had something called a "camera obscura"; it was essentially a darkened room with a small hole near its roof. As light passed through the hole it would project an image on the opposite wall.

This was essentially the first form of projection and it was used to project images while people were waiting for other forms of entertainment like plays or operas to start. Although the idea was there, this device became obsolete as more advanced forms of entertainment became available.

The next breakthrough in the industry was in 1876 when American inventor Joseph Kennedy invented the first device that could show visual imagery.

In this invention, "television" was called "televisor". Although it differed from modern TVs, it still helped stimulate a new form of entertainment.

In 1907, Italian scientist Guglielmo Marconi discovered radio waves and it was soon after that a new form of entertainment became available to average people.

By 1920 inventor Lee de Forest had worked out how to use these waves to transmit images throught the air and developed an early form of television. However, this technology vanished before it could be fully developed because there wasn't much demand for the product at the time.

The first fully working cathode ray TV wasinvented in 1936 by Russian physicist Boris Rosing, who also developed the radio. This television (also known as a "tube" due to its shape) consisted of two electrical grids on either side of a vacuum tube.

The way this worked was that when electricity would be sent from one grid to the other, it would cause small particles called "cathode rays" to be released from the grid and hit a phosphor screen at the bottom of the tube. When this happened, it gave off light which would then be sent through an image sensor that was connected to an amplifier.

This would then project the visual image on a screen. To control the electrical flow, an oscillator and a modulator were needed to manipulate when and how this signal was sent through the machine.
